The Seeds of Sustainability

Our intention is to transform the Emergence Garden into a Sustainability Center where folks can come to experience, participate and learn skills and practices in permaculture and organic food production. We will invite permaculture teachers and master gardeners to speak, offer classes and demos. We will also work towards integrating urban agriculture into the educational curriculum from grade school through to tertiary.

Sarah Murphy is in charge of the garden, assisted by Gerri Willliams.

Work days are Saturdays from 3 pm and Tuesdays from 5 pm. Feel free to drop in at those times, or whenever convenient, to weed, plant, trim, clean up, whatever needs to be done.

Thanks! I got in touch with Brent Sisco, who put me in touch with the people actually heading the "Justice Park Community Garden Association." It sounds like plots are available, and the association is still looking to partner with other groups. Would anyone from this group be interested in eventually expanding the Euclid St pilot project through a partnership with Justice Park? The "ribbon-cutting" is not expected to be until March 2010, but I think this is an exciting opportunity.

Hello, just joined. Does anyone know the status of the community garden under development at Justice Park? From the DPR site looks like it will have community gardening plots as well as composting facilities, but the latest update I could find was February of this year.

Anyone planning to come out on Saturday 3/21? Sarah, our coordinator will be absent and so will i. Contact her sarahmurph@gmail.com for instructions. Last time i checked , lots of seeds had germinated. Probably just some weeding, bed prep needs to be done, but check with Sarah.

Sarah, anything in particular you'd like to feature?

Congrats Esmerelda on setting up Sharing Backyards. You have our full support. We had already posted the information on our main page under Notes. I'm sure some of members will be involved.

Join Sharing Backyards!

My friend and I recently set up the DC chapter of Sharing Backyards. The website encourages urban gardening by connecting people who have space to garden and are willing to share with people who would like to have a gardening space. Whether you're an apartment dweller in search of some good earth or a property-owner with land to share, this site's for you.

We hope you all will take a minute to visit the site. Go to http://dc.sharingbackyards.com to add your listing to the city map and help us get the project off the ground. Spread the word to friends, neighbors, and other interested parties. For questions or suggestions, email sharingbackyardsdc@gmail.com

Hi everyone. Unfortunately I don't have any direct experience to offer to the cause, but I'd love to help out however I can and learn as much as possible.
