Historic McMillan Park is threatened with senseless development if concerned activists do nothing to prevent it. A permaculture solution is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.

This is what i mean ...

Social sustainability must include rehabilitation and restoration of marginalized and broken populations such as the homeless, substance abusers and the incarcerated. There are enough successful working models to show how this can be better done. Growing food and flowers seems to have a therapeutic effect on troubled minds, much in the way that working with animals, especially horses, seems to have on autistic kids. I'd love to see these ideas carried out at Hill East, where the DC jail provides… Continue

I came across this perfect approach to creating an Energy Descent Action Plan in my anthology of quotations, Wisdom for the Soul: Five Millennia of Prescriptions for Spiritual Healing. In Transition-speak it's known as fore- and backcasti… Continue

Shrubs and Small Trees for Washington Gardens

An indispensible list for DC gardens

* Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) can take a lot of shade, and comes in a wide range of sizes.
* *Fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus) is loved for its weeping habit and honeysuckle smell. Its maximum height is a manageable 20 feet. Requires full sun.
* *'Forest Pansy' redbud (Cercis canadensis") - the species grows to 40 feet but many smaller varieties are available.
* *Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) will still flower even in… Continue

Putting down roots

A confluence of factors have influenced me into thinking about establishing my own sustainable home. I was granted permanent residence in the US a couple months ago and thought it might be good to put down some roots now that the specter of being rudely shipped out is that much less likely. I confess to being tempted in a weak moment by the prospect of picking up a foreclosure bargain, but the tightened mortgage market following the sub-prime debacle put paid to that notion.

Spring has brought… Continue

Larry, yes, I am interest in your Psychology of Change group, depending on how often it would meet. I think Janet Kane (Steve Kane's wife) would be very interested too. She is trying to arrange an "Evolutionary Women" group in Greenbelt, but we are slow getting it off the ground. I will email both of you together, to get something going.

I've worked with Mary and took the Facilitators Training end of June in Providence RI. A new group of Facilitators was trained in Alexandria 2 weeks ago so there should be some more ATD symposiums soon in the area. I was at PowerShift Fri eve in Feb which was my first experience with ATD. I'm sure Mary would appreciate any assistance available. Maybe it's time for another ATD in DC? There is a new version coming out soon with updated stats and info related to financial issues. I saw some of the updated videos at Global Gathering in Sept in NY at Garrison Institute.

Susan and I have been talking for some time about alternative finance, and its place in community development, and we have been thinking of creating a discussion piece. We are putting our heads together on this and will post something hopefully before long on the web site.

Cheers, Chris.

I know first hand that Casey Trees is very resourceful with the land, mapping out all area's in the city that can grow a tree. So, I imagine they could know more than me.

But an area that first comes to mind is Sargeant RD and Gallatin St NE, here is a stretch of park federally owned as it is part of the Fort Circle parks. This broad stretch of green receives full sun, is a hill peak so is more arid than wet. Foot traffic seems low, unfortunate for building support, but residential is high as there are apartments and townhouses surrounding the area and there are bus stops along Sargeant RD. There is no water source within the park. There may be a line underground that may not be hard to tap.

There could be a whole forum topic for where 200 fruit trees could go. We could share an interactive map to place marks on what areas we've scouted.

Casey Trees is hiring for two positions, if you need a job with a busy but awesome organization dedicated to empowering people with tree knowledge as a winning strategy to raise up the canopy and to perceive geographically-holistic.
